Our History
The Braver Angels North-Central New Mexico Alliance came into being in the fall of 2022. Our first event was an online Red/Blue workshop. Trained volunteers in neighboring states helped us with the technicalities of conducting the workshop. We also needed to look outside of our state to find enough participants to meet the required red/blue balance. The event was a success, but we knew that having in-person meetings was our preferred mode of operation.
We began to build interest in the community and had enough support in the summer of 2023 to be able to conduct two in-person workshops; first a Skills for Bridging the Divide workshop and then a Depolarizing Within workshop. Both of these were quite successful. At the same time, a dedicated group of members began to meet at lunch once a month for socializing and strategizing.
Over the next year we formed a monthly evening dinner/discussion meeting and experimented with other activities that drew in new members and widened our sphere of influence in the community. We had film screenings, book discussions, informal popup discussions groups, a Being Red in a Blue Environment workshop and a community debate on homelessness.
As we begin to "come alive in 2025" we find that we need to restructure the alliance. Our volunteer base has been spread too thin with our efforts to provide such a wide variety of activities. We are going to focus on one or two areas that hold the most promise for contributing to the Braver Angels mission and that will help us find volunteers willing to take the lead in planning and organizing.
If you are interested in helping us move our alliance forward, please send an email to us at north-central-nm@braverangels.org and we can discuss your interests and availability.
